Director, Design Engineering
Smart is seeking a leader for the Engineering practice in our San Francisco studio. At Smart Design, the Engineering practice is tightly integrated with all of the design disciplines helping teams to identify opportunities for design to help people in their everyday lives. A primary focus of the director is to inspire innovation early in the design process and to devise a plan forward for solving the resulting technical challenges. Being able to work alongside client services to generate new business opportunities as well as being someone who can both deliver and guide staff in bringing innovative solutions to market is essential. In time, you will grow the Design Engineering team in the San Francisco studio, by mentoring existing staff and recruiting additional team members. This is a true roll-up your sleeves position where a proactive, self-starter will succeed.
You should have at least 10 years experience as a design engineer and can draw from extensive experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, client’s internal resources and manufacturing partners solving problems in categories such as house wares, consumer electronics, healthcare and packaging. You are a champion for the value that design can bring to an organization and have a proven track record of content creation, practice building, and developing deep client relationships.
