Director, Interaction Design

We’re looking for an experienced and talented Design Director to oversee our digital design capability and lead business development efforts.

Smart offers an opportunity to reinvent or evolve products and services using our human-centered approach. Based on user research we work from the front-end of innovation to the final vision and execution. Client needs span emerging tech, digital/physical, mobile and web and range from fast-growing startups to some of the most recognized brands in health & wellness, consumer products, mobility, and non-profits.
 
This leadership role will ensure excellence on client projects, build client relationships, and represent Smart in the broader design community through thought leadership and business development efforts to increase brand awareness and help secure new client opportunities. 
 
The position has four primary areas of focus as outlined below.  
 
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Creative direct digital product and experience programs often acting as the project Director across two simualtaneous client programs. 
  2. Drive content creation, points of view and scoping for Business Development efforts bringing digital product and experience design expertise. 
  3. Author thought leadership: Create new points of view for use in articles and videos for marketing purposes. Build content development and speak externally about Smart’s capabilities.
  4. Grow and mentor a small world-class team of UX designers (~3 people): Define responsibilities and expectations for report-tos, and project team members, define and make new hires, providing project guidance and helping their professional growth.
 
Naturally, you have:
  • 10+ years of experience in product innovation projects leading cutting edge digital projects across web, mobile, embedded and screen-less interfaces 
  • Past experience with user research to influence and shape strategic design decisions
  • The experience and ability to lead complex projects and to be the client-facing lead
  • Experience estimating project resource needs for proposals and resourcing
  • Commitment to staying current in design trends including emerging technology, software, best practices, and how to work at the front end of innovation all the way through digital development working alongside software developers 
  • Experience managing and mentoring designers in their professional growth and development of traditional interaction design deliverables (user flows, wireframes, personas, prototypes) and UI/production ready assets
  • Skill in presenting (selling solutions) to clients
  • Bonus if you’re active within the design community via thought leadership, panel engagements, judging, etc.
