Strategy Director

We are searching for a Strategy Director to join our NY studio in a full-time capacity.

The Strategy Director will wear many hats, including strategic consultation on projects and pitches, leading strategic projects, developing thought leadership on innovation topics, and mentoring strategy and design staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead Strategy and Design projects: Serve as the Project Director on projects to frame innovation opportunities, design and guide user and stakeholder research, secondary research, data analysis and insight synthesis to build and prototype new service offerings, customer experiences, and/or products.  
  2. Drive business development opportunities:  Act as the content lead and develop points of view for business development efforts, participating in pitch meetings. Build relationships with clients and prospective clients for future work. Expand existing relationships and spot opportunities for new projects. 
  3. Mentorship of staff: Define responsibilities and expectations for report-tos, and project team members, providing project guidance and helping their professional growth. Grow the team and skills within.
  4. Author thought leadership: Explore thought leadership opportunities and create new points of view for use in articles and videos for marketing purposes. Build content development and speak externally about Smart’s main thinking topics and industries of interest.  
Project Responsibilities vary based on projects, but may include:
  • Guide insight synthesis and identify emerging opportunities based on a combination of industry/market analysis, competitive benchmarkingdata analysis, stakeholder & subject matter expert interviews, exemplar audits, and trends analysis
  • Direct consumer research efforts, including focus groups, shop-a-longs, and in-home ethnographies, while incorporating existing secondary data regarding consumer segmentation, behaviors, and needs.
  • Design and prototype new products, services or experiences that are authentic to the clients’ brand, with the design team, focused on business viability & technical feasibility
  • Facilitate client workshops and meeting to identify new opportunity spaces and business models, ideate new solutions, develop new capabilities, and enable senior commitment
  • Knowledge and application of business cases or business models to assess, prioritize, and support recommendations to clients
Naturally, you’ll have:
  • 10+ years of work experience in a fast-paced innovation, management consulting, or client service-based environment with a focus on digital
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Masters degree preferred
  • Demonstrated track record of leading successful innovation-oriented projects for large corporations, ventures groups, & startups that balance a creative mindset with strategy fundamentals
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to leverage qualitative and quantitative data for the creation of impactful strategy recommendations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to present to senior level clients and persuade internal leaders
  • Proven experience in business development with the ability to grow existing client relationships and build new opportunities
  • High degree of proficiency in leading and developing junior and mid-level staff in entrepreneurial environments
