The opportunity
Breaking into outdoor cooking
Solo, known for its sleek and efficient fire pits, wanted to expand into a new category: outdoor cooking. Building on their earlier cooking products fueled by their signature fire pits, they saw an opportunity with propane-powered griddles. Solo wanted to enter the category in a way that felt both unique and true to their brand. They needed to understand how to stand out in a market dominated by large, rectangular griddles while creating something that felt social, functional, and premium.
Our process
Researching the backyard experience
The project began with in-home research, visiting 8 different households in New York and Connecticut where grilling and griddling were already part of users’ lifestyles. By observing backyard layouts and cooking setups, we learned the real-life flow of prepping, cooking, cleaning, and storing. We also conducted physical audits of existing products and completed desk research to map the competitive landscape.
Cooking as a social centerpiece
One insight stood out: griddling is as much about entertaining as it is about cooking. The griddle often becomes the gathering point—like a kitchen island at a party—where friends and family congregate. That meant the design needed to elevate the showmanship and hosting duties of the cook, making the griddle not just a tool, but a social centerpiece.
Where efficiency meets entertaining
We also learned how critical cleaning, storage, and speed were to the experience. Cooking on a griddle is fast-paced, so having tools, surfaces, and storage within arm’s reach matters. We explored a full accessory strategy with modular side tables, drink holders, and more. These insights shaped our approach to the core design, and allows for the possibility of complementary products in the future.
Shaping heat, Sharing moments
Breaking away from the standard rectangular slab, we designed an inviting racetrack-shaped cooktop. Our final concept comes in a balanced mid-range size, while most competitors go small or large. Mimicking a kitchen table, it encourages guests to gather around. We also pioneered the use of a multi-ply clad stainless steel grilling surface that delivers durability, even heat distribution, and ease of cleaning. This first-in-category application brings a luxury material to an accessible price point.
The impact
Launching a category-defining Griddle
The Solo Griddle launched to positive reception, earning strong reviews from consumers and reinforcing Solo’s credibility beyond fire pits. It introduced a stainless steel cooktop, which is uncommon in the category. By pairing functional performance with a form that invites connection, we helped Solo carve out a distinct position in a crowded market. Transforming the griddle from a simple cooking surface into the heart of the gathering.
