10 questions with architect Michael Kostow

Smart Design has had a long partnership with Kostow Greenwood Architects, with the renowned architecture design firm leading the design in many of our work studios. In Interior Design’s recent feature on Michael Kostow, Smart Design’s design studio in Chelsea, NY was selected as a key project from Kostow’s 35+ year career.

The main entrance to The Smart Design Studio on the top floor of the iconic Starrett-Lehigh Building in Chelsea shows the double-height clerestory. This 2005 project by Kostow Greenwood Architects became a precursor to the open-office planning standard for modern workplace design. Following this project, Michael Kostow would lead the team for Smart Design’s offices in London and San Francisco. In 2023, Kostow Greenwood Architects will complete the Smart Design Studio’s new workplace in the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard which will introduce a 21^st century standard for the workplace.
