Redesign in record time
EDJY reimagined the traditional nail clipper—virtually unchanged since the 1880s—to offer a sharper, more precise experience tailored to nail geometry. They partnered with Smart Design to enhance the visual appeal of their newly engineered architecture—all within a tight timeline.
Working within the existing product architecture created by EDJY, our team had to balance precise technical requirements and manufacturing restraints with the challenges of introducing a new cutting experience to users. Through iterative rounds of prototyping across various end users, Smart Design’s final product is adaptable to the unique grooming preferences seen across users.
Crafting the perfect cutting experience
The final design reflects usability learnings and the brand’s aesthetic vision. It blends approachable soft outer surfaces and gentle curves with a prominent blade to celebrate the quality and precision of EDJY’s cutting functionality. Thoughtful design touch points help guide users and make the new cutting experience more comfortable and secure.
With Smart Design’s help, EDJY’s redesigned nail clipper merges precision with approachability, delivering a new, visually refined cutting experience. Through rapid prototyping and user centered design, we ensured a production-ready solution with a quick turn around while working within manufacturing constraints.
A gap in the grooming toolkit
In continuing our collaboration, EDJY came to Smart Design with an often overlooked problem: while fingernail clippers are everywhere, toenail clippers are typically just scaled-up versions of the same tool. They lacked the ergonomics, visibility, and control needed for a task that requires a different orientation, more force, and often more awkward positioning. Incorporating EDJY’s “cutting not crushing” tech into their toe nail cutter was essential.
An ergonomic breakthrough
The final design rethinks the toenail cutting experience with a wider surface and a subtle dip in the geometry that naturally cradles the thumb, creating a more stable and comfortable grip. A clear top-and-bottom orientation and improved visibility of the cutting area helps users position the tool with ease. Unlike traditional clippers, this one feels intentionally built for the hand and purposefully designed for the unique demands of cutting toe nails.
For EDJY, the project represents more than just one tool; it expands their product line from fingers to toes, opening the door to new categories and customers. By creating one of the first truly dedicated toenail cutters designed around ergonomics, Smart Design and EDJY have introduced a product that challenges category norms and solves a universal human need with thoughtful design.
