Refreshing a legacy
In 2013, we designed an innovative line of produce storage products for OXO. A decade later, OXO challenged us again: evolve the original line to better serve modern households. With approximately 40% of purchased household food going to waste, there were opportunities to improve storage solutions to help extend freshness and support sustainability.
Lessons from the fridge
Our work on OXO’s fridge organization products provided a foundation for updating the produce storage line. These principles guided our approach in refining the produce savers, allowing us to thoughtfully shape a modernized line.
We established four key design principles:
- Increase organization: Ensure users always know where every item in their fridge is stored.
- Keep things visible: Design storage that allows users to easily see contents at a glance.
- Make things accessible: Enable effortless access to all items, reducing the need for time-consuming rummaging.
- Systems approach: Create products that feel like part of a cohesive family yet work perfectly as standalone solutions.
Perfecting freshness
When reimagining produce storage, we started with primary research—listening to user insights on freshness challenges and kitchen organization habits. We also analyzed existing market products to identify gaps and opportunities, ensuring our designs addressed unmet needs and stood out from competitors. Additionally, we explored produce storage science to learn how environmental factors affect freshness, allowing us to integrate scientifically backed insights into our design strategy. This research, supported by rapid prototyping and iterative testing, shaped our design strategy.
Three additional design principles:
- Tailor climate: Develop storage solutions that create an environment designed to extend the life of stored produce.
- Guide and educate: Differentiate product features to clearly communicate benefits and encourage waste-reducing habits.
- Think beyond storage: Integrate product design with meal prep practices, ensuring that the storage solution complements the overall cooking experience.
Smarter storage and fresher produce
By merging our successful fridge organization framework with targeted research insights for produce storage, we crafted an updated product line that delivers on several fronts.
