Task lighting redefined

The way we live and work in our homes has been evolving over the past several years. Spaces that were once reserved for a single purpose have transitioned into multi-use spaces that may need to shift between a place to relax or a zone to focus on work, school, or hobbies. The pandemic has accelerated these trends, but since the invention of mobile computing the line between work and home has been getting blurrier. 

 

Smart Design and Gantri teamed up to create a lighting collection that doesn’t try and blend home and work, but allows for transitions between these distinct use case to help people focus when they need to and relax when they don’t.

Innovation by Design Awards

The Aim Collection was named a finalist in the Home and Products categories and an honorable mention in the Sustainability category at the 2022 Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards.

International Design Excellence Awards

The Aim Collection won Bronze in the Furniture & Lighting category at the 2022 IDEA Awards.

Lighting the way

Smart Design surveyed people’s homes to understand how they are using their spaces and where their current lights are located. We noted that work doesn’t always happen in conventional places, and there is a need for lighting that can serve more than one purpose. 

 

While the needs of the home are evolving, we did not want to provide a temporary answer, but rather create lights that feel like timeless heirlooms with a modern, utilitarian twist. Using classic, iconic forms allows the lights to blend seamlessly into the home so they stand the test of time and will grow and adapt with the user.

The Aim Collection

Each element of the Aim Collection has an “active mode” to promote focused work behavior and a “passive mode” that allows for softer, more diffused lighting to create tranquility and inspire togetherness. This versatility is enabled by multiple points of adjustability that allow the user to transition from focused lighting to ambient lighting. 

 

By changing the character of light we can change the entire mood of the room and allow people to develop healthier distinctions between work time and home time.

Made for mobile

With a swivel head and handle for easy portability, The Aim Table light allows for focused lighting and transitions to ambient lighting when the head is placed down.

A timeless take on task lighting

The Aim Collection represents Smart’s decades of experience designing thoughtful and ergonomic products for the home, as well as Gantri’s sustainability and design-forward ethos.

 

Each light’s design and integrated hardware celebrates Gantri’s 3D printing manufacturing by proving that the technology can be used to create restrained, refined forms, not just the wildly organic shapes sometimes associated with 3D printing. The collection was made to stand the test of time, and with Gantri’s sustainable plant polymers, it is better for the earth too. 

 

Smart Design’s work also identified a new lighting architecture that wasn’t part of Gantri’s existing portfolio— the clamp. By introducing this hardware element Smart Design created an entirely new category for future designers at Gantri.
